INTRODUCTION.

Shazam! Fury of the Gods 2023 is an action comedy superhero movie that features the DC Comics character Shazam. The film is a follow-up to the 2019 movie Shazam! And it is the twelfth movie in the DC Extended Universe (DCEU). New Line Cinema and DC Studios produced the film, which Warner Bros. Pictures distributed. David F. Sandberg directed the film, written by Henry Gayden and Chris Morgan and produced by Peter Safran. The movie stars a cast that includes Zachary Levi, Asher Angel, Jack Dylan Grazer, Rachel Zegler, Adam Brody, Ross Butler, D. J. Cotrona, Grace Caroline Currey, Meagan Good, Lucy Liu, Djimon Hounsou, Helen Mirren.

The film’s production was postponed from its original starting date of mid-2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Filming eventually began on May 26, 2021, in Atlanta, Georgia, with cinematographer Gyula Pados in charge. In June, director Sandberg announced that Grace Fulton would be taking on the role of the adult version of Mary, replacing Michelle Borth, with Fulton’s appearance altered for the superhero character. A month later, photos from the set revealed that Djimon Hounsou would return as the Wizard Shazam. Filming wrapped up on August 31, 2021.

Shazam was released on March 17, 2023, and runs for 2 hours. English is the only language spoken.

SYNOPSIS.

“Shazam! Fury of the Gods” is a sequel that follows the journey of a teenager named Billy Batson, who can transform into his superhero persona, Shazam, by saying the magical word “SHAZAM!”

SHAZAM! FURY OF THE GODS FILM REVIEW.

SHAZAM! FURY OF THE GODS FILM REVIEW.

A mythical staff that is said to harness the gift of all gods is on exhibit in a museum somewhere in the world, and only a few tourists want to see it, except, of course, some strange women who dressed as ancient soldiers. Seeing the staff in an exhibit box makes them uncomfortable as they would love to get their hands on this staff. They push the box until it falls over. As soon as they each touch the broken team, an electricity-like wave enters their bodies, and it feels like they have regained their powers.

Now with the ability to make anyone do their bidding with just a whipper, one of the sisters whippers a strange language into the ears of one of the guards, who is forced to do the same to anyone he comes across.

These sister soldiers are gods from another realm who have come to defeat the Champions of the Earth, but they can’t do that with a broken staff as the staff has no power. The staff is not a mere one and can only be fixed by a wizard who the sisters locked up in their realm. They travel back, and using their whisper, they force the Wizard to glue the staff. The Wizard tries to resist but can’t; the whisper is so powerful they must comply.

Some kids raised in foster care by a man and his wife were ordained the Champions by the Wizard, so now, wherever there is a crime, they try to solve it. They do this behind their parent’s backs because their parents wouldn’t understand. The first ‘saving’ they had to do in this film was tell their parents that they were going to ‘fight crime,’ the response they got was ‘okay’ with a confused look.

Freddy, the bully’s favorite and one of the Champions, meets Anna in school for the first time and falls in love with her.

Billy Batson, the leader of the Champion team, is warned that the Daughters of Atlas are coming to Earth. According to the Wizard, ‘the daughter of Atlas is coming to unmake your world and torture mankind for all eternity in the pit of endless agony.’

The Daughters of Atlas soon reach Earth, and the champions must now assemble to fight them off.

I enjoyed this movie as one of its main virtue is humor. Who wouldn’t want to laugh a bit while watching a movie? Not me. One of the funniest scenes in this film was when Billy tried to kiss Wonder Woman in a restaurant. I laughed so loudly.

The storyline of this film is excellent, but what kills it is the acting, animation, and effects. On a typical day, the acting is okay, but why did I say the acting kills the movie? It looks weird to me when adults behave like kids, and the same kids in their standard form behave like adults. For instance, the champions in human form (kids) act more responsibly and maturely than when they transform into Champions. It needed to be clarified. Billing, the leader, barely smiles or speaks but suddenly becomes talkative when he transforms.

The animation is okay, but it could be better. For a film produced by DC, I expect so much more. For example, let’s take the flying; the throwing and flying looked faked and choreographed, even how they landed or posed after landing.

The sounds and scores are impressive. They helped improve the film’s mood, making it more acceptable and relatable.

Their conversations are exciting but aren’t free-flowing. It looks like it is being read from somewhere.

I love how the film ended. The movie peaked at the end as it was entertaining and emotional at the same time. For unknown reasons, I enjoyed the third phase of the film better than the first and second.

After the show, stick around for the post-credits because the short clip after is funny. You’ll enjoy it.

DID YOU KNOW?

As per the information on IMDB, in the movie Shazam, the character Shazam claims that he will emerge victorious over Hespera by stating that he has watched all the ‘Fast and the Furious films. Helen Mirren, who portrays the role of Hespera, has acted in several sequels and spin-offs of The Fast and the Furious franchise as a criminal boss named Magdalene “Queenie” Shaw.

CONCLUSION.

Despite its flaws, Shazam: Fury of the Gods is an averagely okay movie. The plot is relatively straightforward, and you can quickly grasp the gist of it by watching the trailers. It could be more unique and captivating; it’s pretty predictable. I suggest watching it once for amusement, but it’s not worth recommending otherwise. Shazam! Fury of the Gods has a PG-13 rating for its action, violent scenes, and language.
