Elemental (2023) Film Review: A Must-See Animated Film for the Whole Family!

Elemental (2023) is a delightful animated film that combines elements of comedy, fantasy, and family entertainment. Directed by Peter Sohn (“The Good Dinosaur”, “Partly Cloudy”), this movie is a visual treat for audiences of all ages. The screenplay, written by John Hoberg, Kat Likkel, and Brenda Hsueh, brings to life a captivating story filled with laughter and wonder.

Produced by Denise Ream (“The Good Dinosaur” and “Cars 2”). Elemental features the talented voices of Leah Lewis and Mamoudou Athie, lending their skills to the endearing characters of Ember and Wade.

With a staggering budget of $200 million, this film showcases impressive animation and visual effects, creating a vivid and immersive experience for the audience. Released on June 16, 2023, Elemental promises an exciting journey that spans 1 hour and 49 minutes, ensuring ample time for viewers to become fully immersed in its magical and comedic storyline.

SYNOPSIS.

Disney and Pixar’s “Elemental” is an original feature film set in Element City, where residents of Fire, Water, Earth and Air live together. The story introduces Ember, a tough, quick-witted and fiery young woman, whose friendship with a fun, sappy, go-with-the-flow guy named Wade challenges her beliefs about the world they live in.

ELEMENTAL (2023) FILM REVIEW.

Bernie and Cinder Lumen, a couple of the Fire Element, welcomed their daughter Ember into the world. Ember was just like her parents as she inherited their fire nature but possessed an extraordinary zest and enthusiasm. However, due to their fire-related identity, Bernie and Cinder faced rejection in numerous places. Eventually, they found solace in a deserted building, surrounded by the calming presence of the water element. It was in this desolate building that they decided to establish their new home, creating a shop called “The Fireplace.”

In this store, they have a special blue flame that holds great significance to their village and the customs they left behind. It serves as a reminder of their traditions and the way they used to live. Additionally, this unique flame helped them attract fire people from all over the place to patronize them. Ember takes great pleasure in assisting her father at the shop, envisioning a future where she will eventually inherit it. “Someday this shop will all be mine,” she says with her dad patting her head as he responds “When you are ready.”

Ember is a very cheerful girl but she also possesses a hot-headed nature and often unleashes bursts of fire when trying to calm herself down or let go of her emotions. As Bernie ages, he gradually entrusts Ember with the management of the shop. Then, on this faithful day, he hands over the responsibility of running the business to Ember, and her excitement knows no bounds. However, when a customer pushes her buttons, she reacts in such a manner that jolts her dad out of his resting place.

Her dad tells her that the shop will be hers if she learns to control her anger. After providing her with advice on managing her anger, her dad offers her another opportunity to oversee the business. However, when the pressure from customers becomes overwhelming, she seeks solace in the basement to release some tension. Unfortunately, her outburst triggers a chain of events, leading to a burst pipe and the basement being flooded with water. Unexpectedly, the flood also engulfs a city inspector named Wade Ripple, who is of the Water Element.

While investigating the situation, Wade discovers that the materials used in the business premises do not meet the required standards. Despite Ember’s pleas, Wade proceeds to document his findings and sends the report to his employer, Gale Cumulus, who is of Air Element. As a consequence, Gale decides to shut down the place. 

Ember finds herself in an exhilarating predicament when the water element inspector, Wade, becomes an unexpected ally. With the threat of her father’s business being shut down looming over them, Ember realizes the immense importance of the business to her family. Determined to prevent its closure, she and Wade join forces, embarking on a thrilling journey to save what her father has worked so hard to build. Together, they must navigate through challenges to make Gale Cumulus, the influential air element employer overturn his previous decision.

Elemental (2023) is a captivating movie that skillfully explores the dynamics of family and the complexities of running a family business. It seamlessly weaves these themes into an entertaining narrative that can resonate deeply, especially for those who have experienced the challenges of managing a family enterprise.

Even if you’re not well-versed in the world of “family business,” this movie still captivates you with its universal themes, including a touch of romance. It doesn’t matter if you’re not familiar with the intricacies of that world; you won’t feel excluded at any point while watching this film. It effortlessly weaves in a romantic storyline that resonates with audiences across the board.

This awesome movie features an incredible voice cast who brought multiple characters to life. Their voices perfectly matched the character’s actions and conveyed raw emotions. Every character in this film stood out for me most especially the two main characters, who truly captured the essence of their roles flawlessly. The voice acting was fantastic, showcasing impeccable delivery, expressiveness, versatility, consistent voices, and amazing chemistry with other characters. These qualities elevated the film and made it shine brightly, sweeping away any dust of mediocrity.

The animation is mind-blowingly awesome, leaving you in awe just like when you watched The Lion King for the first time. This film isn’t just about surface-level fun. It’s got a hidden treasure buried deep within its story. It’s all about chasing your dreams and finding happiness, no matter what obstacles stand in your way. It’s like a secret motivational coach whispering in your ear, telling you to never give up.

Elemental takes you on an emotional rollercoaster, a humorous flight, a nice music party, and much more. One minute you’ll be laughing so hard you’ll need a seatbelt for your funny bone. The next minute, you’ll be wiping away tears of joy or sadness. It’s like being on an emotional airplane, soaring through the highs and lows of the story.

Elemental wasn’t just a hilarious film; the amusing antics of the children at the theater had me in stitches too. There was this one particular moment when Bernie, Ember’s dad, stooped down in a deep bow, demonstrating the utmost reverence. One of the kids in the audience curiously asked, “What’s he doing?” To which another child replied, “He’s praying.” It was such a comical exchange that had everyone bursting into laughter.

CONCLUSION.

Elemental (2023) is a thrilling fantasy and comedy film. It delivers non-stop excitement, hilarious moments, and a phenomenal soundtrack that elevates the whole experience. The film is a treat, especially for the younger audience who couldn’t stop laughing throughout. Not only that, the character development is top-notch, adding depth and richness to the story.

This movie is a surefire hit that will leave you entertained from start to finish. Get ready to embark on a wild journey that will leave you inspired, entertained, and singing along. Trust me; you won’t want this party to end!

The film can only be seen in the cinema from the 16th of June and it is rated PG for some peril, thematic elements, and brief language.
