INTRODUCTION.

Scrapper (2023) is a captivating British comedy-drama, marking Charlotte Regan’s impressive directorial debut. This cinematic gem is a collaboration between BBC Film and BFI, partnering with Great Point Media, and features the talents of Harris Dickinson, Lola Campbell, and Alin Uzun.

Harris Dickinson, no stranger to Regan’s creative brilliance, having previously collaborated on the 2019 short film ‘Oats & Barley,’ expressed his eagerness to work with the same exceptional team once more.

‘Scrapper’ made its grand debut at the prestigious 2023 Sundance Film Festival, where it clinched the illustrious Grand Jury Prize in the World Cinema Dramatic Competition category. The film graced the screens on August 25, 2023, with a runtime of 1 hour and 24 minutes.

SYNOPSIS.

From IMDB, Georgie, a dreamy 12-year-old girl, lives happily alone in her London flat, filling it with magic. Suddenly, her estranged father turns up and forces her to confront reality.

SCRAPPER FILM REVIEW.

In the proverbial ‘village’ of life, where they say ‘it takes a community to raise a child,’ a different story unfolds. Meet Georgie, a young girl grappling with the profound loss of her mother, journeying through the intricate landscape of the five stages of grief. According to her own self-assessment, she finds herself situated in the third stage. Georgie lives alone as she feels that she has the capabilities to take care of herself.

In a courageous bid to self-sustain, Georgie makes a bold choice: she turns to the underground world of bicycle theft, peddling these stolen rides for a modest sum. She doesn’t traverse this path alone; her steadfast companion is none other than her closest confidant Ali who lives with his Mom.

Georgie was confronted by Ali about the progress she has made in navigating her grief, Georgie offers a candid reflection, saying, ‘I believe I’m nearing the end, perhaps in the third or fourth stage, but I’m determined to journey through the remaining phases with resolve.'”

While jokingly practicing her hosting skills for a lively lipstick sales show, featuring a vibrant red lip palette, Georgie’s concentration is suddenly shattered by an unexpected guest leaping over her garden fence. The uninvited visitor reveals himself as none other than her estranged father, Mr. Jason. Georgie is left bewildered by this startling revelation, struggling to fathom the surreal turn of events. Living alone when she’s supposed to be residing with her uncle, Jason threatens to report her to the authorities.

After reluctantly granting him entry, a hasty plot is hatched to discreetly send him on his way. But what, you might wonder, was their cunning strategy? They cleverly requested that he get them(Ali and Georgie) some Chinese takeout from a nearby restaurant, intending to lock him out upon his return. However, as fate would have it, Jason turns out to be an adept climber, effortlessly scaling the fence and letting himself back in.

Ali and Georgie came back from their play date only to find Jason sitting comfortably in the house. And so, at this point, the true adventure begins. What unfolds next in their unpredictable tale? What other mischievous scheme will they concoct? The only way to find out is to stay tuned and witness the captivating saga that follows.

I’m finally done with Scrappers, and now I’m left pondering a singular question: Why in the world did it take me so long to see this movie? Why, indeed? This exquisite British Comedy Drama captured my heart, boasting a near-perfect execution that I can unabashedly applaud.

Without further ado, let’s delve into the cinematic experience, beginning with our captivating cast. To say this movie primarily revolves around just two key characters Georgie and Jason, would be no exaggeration. Lola Campbell shines as the vivacious Georgie, while Harris Dickinson takes the spotlight as the enigmatic Jason. These two individuals share an electrifying on-screen chemistry that’s nothing short of mesmerizing. Young Campbell exudes charisma, portraying her character as charming yet morally with a cheeky yet funny facial expression. Meanwhile, Dickinson steps away from relying solely on his striking appearance and physique, delivering a performance that beautifully charts the evolution of their relationship, which is, as life often is, far from a smooth journey.

The writing, despite the constraints of the budget, impresses with its authentic and humorous dialogue, making it a highly recommended watch.

Scrapper delves into a captivating array of themes including grief, family, personal growth, and friendship, all skillfully explored through a potent blend of raw emotion and genuinely witty humor.

Throughout the film, the presentation, cinematography, vibrant colors, evocative soundtrack, and carefully crafted settings contribute to a visually striking and professional experience. This movie strikes a harmonious balance between humor and heartfelt ideas, incorporating some unique narrative approaches and showcasing exceptional city cinematography. The attention to detail, from the immersive environmental sounds like buzzing flies and passing cars, to the well-executed accents, adds to the overall appeal.

CONCLUSION.

‘Scrapper’ is a cinematic gem, blending humor and emotion seamlessly. It’s a film that prioritizes thematic depth over a rigid plot, allowing its characters to shine. Lola’s performance as Georgie stands out as a masterclass in portraying a character with a compelling mix of tenacity and innocence. Harris Dickinson’s equally impressive performance underscores his position as one of Britain’s finest young actors in the industry today.

Do I recommend ‘Scrapper’? Absolutely. You’re bound to fall in love with it. As a testament to its broad appeal, ‘Scrapper’ holds a PG-13 rating, ensuring it can be enjoyed by a diverse audience.

Catch ‘Scrapper’ in a theatres in Australia for a delightful cinematic experience!
