SPIDER-MAN: ACROSS THE SPIDER-VERSE.
The film begins with Gwen Stacy accidentally killing Peter, who ingested a potion that turned him into a Lizard in his quest to be “special”. Gwen thinking he was a villain, murders Peter by tossing him into a tower, which subsequently collapses on him. It wasn’t until after the tower collapsed on the Lizard and the effect of the potion wore off did she discover what she had done to Peter, her best friend. Gwen’s father, a Captain in the Force, apprehends her at the crime site, but she escapes.
One evening, Gwen receives information through her father’s walkie-talkie that there is an intruder at a specific location. Intrigued, she decides to follow the lead and arrives at the scene, only to discover that the villain is a Vulture from an alternate universe. Through a series of intense fights and with the assistance of Spider-People Miguel O’Hara and Jessica Drew, they finally manage to subdue the Vulture.
However, before Gwen can fully recover from the intense battle, she hears a familiar voice “Hands in the air”, it says. It turns out to be her father, informing her that she is under arrest. Helplessly, Gwen realizes that she is unable to escape as she has run out of spiderwebs. Having no other choice, she discloses her true identity to her father, an act she had never intended to do. The Captain is left speechless, unable to utter a word for a considerable period.
Still bent on doing his job, the Captain tries to arrest his daughter, not for anything but for the murder of Peter. Miguel and Jessica intervene, interrupting the arrest. They manage to confine the Captain in a cage and hands Gwen a portal-generating watch, offering her the opportunity to accompany them to their universe. Although reluctant, Gwen eventually agrees to join them on their journey.
Miles Morales resides in the Brooklyn of Earth-1610, where he is the only Spider-Man. He deeply misses his friend Gwen, evident from the numerous drawings he has made of her, and he finds it challenging to meet his parents’ expectations. Miles even considers the possibility of revealing his secret identity to his parents, wondering if they would still love him.
On his journey to a parent-teacher meeting, he unexpectedly encounters the villain known as the Spot, who is attempting to steal an ATM by utilizing portals for transportation. The Spot, a scientist who claims to have come from Miles’ past, discloses that he unintentionally turned Miles into Spider-Man. He explains that the spider that was not supposed to bite Miles. Moreover, he reveals that Miles played a role in his transformation into a being called “the Spot”, endowed with the power to generate and manipulate portals.
While trying to clarify this to Miles, the Spot inadvertently propels himself into a void. Inside this void, he gains the ability to traverse different universes.
Miles is grounded but despite being grounded, Gwen from an alternate universe visits Miles. Miles disregards his parents’ rules and accompanies Gwen without knowing her mission to capture The Spot. Gwen tracks The Spot’s whereabouts using a device while she distracts Miles. Gwen leaves to resume her search while Miles secretly follows. She fails in her mission, however, Jessica gives her a second chance to apprehend The Spot on Earth-50101.
Miles discovers that there is more to Gwen than coming to his Universe to say “hi”, so he follows her to Earth-50101.
In the realm of Earth-50101, an enthralling and exhilarating adventure unfolds, unravelling mysteries and introducing numerous unexpected plot twists.
Now that I’ve finished discussing the story, let me share my thoughts on Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse.
In my opinion, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse is incredible. It ranks among the greatest comic book movies ever made, and you can quote me anywhere. This film is simply mind-blowing, with its captivating storytelling, stunning animation, memorable characters, great cinematography, and even songs. It’s what I consider a flawless movie, ticking all the right boxes.
Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse truly delved into the depths of its characters. This stood out to me because it explored various family dramas, allowing us to connect with each character on a personal level as if we already knew them. The presence of these family issues showcased the vulnerability of the superheroes, highlighting their ability to display emotions and reminding us that beneath their extraordinary powers, they are still human.
I was pleasantly surprised by the portrayal of every character; each one possessed unique qualities that made them special and memorable. What struck me the most was how relatable all the characters were. The situations they faced mirrored experiences that many of us have encountered in our own lives.
The animation in Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse was astounding. I decided to watch a YouTube video that delved into the intricacies of the animation process, and I was completely mesmerized. It’s remarkable how the crew managed to make such a complex process appear effortless. Every aspect, from the intricately designed settings to the cleverly chosen camera angles and the seamless motion, was executed with brilliance.
Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, the creative minds behind the film, possess a truly magical touch. They struck the perfect balance between heartfelt storytelling, profound depth, and quirky humor. They are truly exceptional storytellers. As stated in the preview, we had an idea of what the animation was going to look like but we didn’t know it was going to be this good. One aspect that particularly stood out was the variety of animation styles employed throughout the movie, each universe having its unique visual aesthetic. It added an extra layer of creativity and visual appeal to the overall experience.
This movie is an absolute blast. Just when you think you’ve witnessed an impressive stunt from one Spider-person, another one comes along and delivers an even more awe-inspiring feat. It’s like a never-ending cycle of excitement and jaw-dropping moments.
The writer of this film has consistently delivered exceptional work, rarely ever producing a disappointing movie. Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse is yet another shining example of their talent. The film’s fast-paced nature and rapid-fire jokes make it highly rewatchable, as you discover new information and nuances with each viewing. I found the fight scene between the Spot and Spider-Man to be one of the highlights of this film. It not only showcased their physical abilities but also incorporated humor into the mix, creating an enjoyable and entertaining spectacle.
