WHAT IS INSIDE OUT 2 ABOUT? SYNOPSIS/PLOT
Things are about to get crazy in Riley’s head! Remember that move to San Fran two years ago? Yeah, well, Riley’s officially 13 and about to enter the High School jungle. Her emotions, those wacky characters who run the show up there (Joy, the cheerleader; Sadness, the raincloud; Anger, the firecracker; Disgust, the barf queen; and Fear, the nervous wreck) have been keeping things chill.
They even built a special room for Riley’s core personality, stuffed with all her best memories. But now, things are about to get emotional (pun intended).
Just before a super important hockey tryout weekend, a puberty alarm goes off in Riley’s head, and a bunch of construction worker emotions barge in and start messing with the control panel. They warn the old emotions (Joy and the gang) that even bigger emotions are on their way.
Suddenly, four new emotions show up – like the transfer students you never knew existed. There’s Envy, who’s always jealous; Embarrassment, the master of cringe; Ennui, the total bore-fest; and Anxiety, the ultimate worrywart.
At first, it seems like they might be cool, but things get bumpy fast. Joy wants Riley to have fun at the hockey camp, while Anxiety is freaking out that Riley needs to make the team and become BFFs with everyone (especially since Riley’s old friends are going to a different school).
Anxiety, convinced Riley needs a revamp, throws all her good memories into the back of her mind and locks up Joy and the others in a dusty memory vault. With the new crew in charge, Anxiety uses all of Riley’s negative feelings to build a whole new, messed-up version of her personality.
Meanwhile, the old emotions manage to escape the vault and see Anxiety turning Riley into a total mess. She’s trying to be friends with the popular girl by copying everything she does, which is backfiring. The emotions split up on a rescue mission – Sadness heads back to HQ, while the others dive into the dark depths of Riley’s mind to find her good memories.
It’s a close call, but they manage to snag them just in time. The only problem? Getting back to HQ is like navigating a social media comment section – a total flood of bad memories tries to bury them! They ride the wave (literally) back to HQ, but guess what? All those bad memories mess with Riley’s good ones even more. Anxiety’s plan backfired, making Riley feel like a total loser.
Just as things are about to explode, the old emotions make it back. Joy convinces Anxiety that Riley doesn’t need to change to be awesome. But the damage is done – Riley’s having a full-blown panic attack, and her emotions are all tangled up in a giant mess.

We get to see our old friends’ Joy, Anger, Sadness, Fear, and Disgust back in action. Each of these characters continues to play a crucial role in Riley’s emotional journey. Joy, with her positivity, tries to keep everyone happy and at peace. Anger is still hilariously hot-headed, while Sadness remains the voice of compassion. Fear and Disgust add their unique perspectives, making the emotional headquarters lively.
The sequel introduces some new faces as stated in our preview: Embarrassment, Ennui (boredom), Envy, and Anxiety. These new emotions bring fresh dynamics to the story.
Anxiety, voiced by Maya Hawke, stands out as a significant addition, perfectly capturing the jitters and worries of teenage life. Envy, played by Ayo Edebiri, adds a layer of complexity, showing how Riley navigates feelings of jealousy and comparison.

The animation in Inside Out 2 is nothing short of spectacular. Pixar has outdone itself again with stunning visuals. WRITING STYLE AND STORY
The writing beautifully captures the complexity of adolescence. Riley’s preparation to join the FogHorn Hockey team becomes a central plot point, symbolizing her hopes and dreams. Throughout the movie, Riley faces numerous challenges, including friendship issues, emotional turbulence, and pressure. But as the story progresses, we see her grow and find her way, reminding us that everything eventually falls into place.

Inside Out 2 is extremely relatable for all ages but especially for older viewers. It's more mature than the first, but that's a good thing.
