INTRODUCTION
Originally titled “The Watchers,” the film’s name was switched to “The Watched” in the UK and Ireland to avoid a mix-up with the Netflix series “The Watcher.”
“The Watchers” 2024 is a supernatural fantasy horror movie that marks the directorial debut of Ishana Night Shyamalan, gotten from the 2022 novel by A. M. Shine. With M. Night Shyamalan, yep, M. Night Shyamalan’s daughter, producing, this film. The star-studded cast includes Dakota Fanning, Georgina Campbell, Olwen Fouere, and Oliver Finnegan.
In a thrilling bidding war, Warner Bros. Pictures snatched up “The Watchers” for $30 million, releasing it in U.S. theaters on June 7, 2024.
The Watcher runs for 1 hour and 42 minutes of PG-13-rated terror, violence, and some pretty intense themes.
WHAT IS THE WATCHERS ABOUT? SYNOPSIS/PLOT
Mina, an American immigrant working in a pet shop in Galway, Ireland, struggles to come to terms with the death of her mother, which she inadvertently caused fifteen years prior. Mina’s boss tasks her with delivering a valuable parrot to a zoo in Belfast. En route, her car breaks down, stranding her in a forest. Lost, she names the parrot Darwin.
She follows an old woman, Madeline, to a bunker-like building, nicknamed ‘The Coop’, and meets two other occupants, Ciara and Daniel. Madeline explains that mysterious creatures called ‘The Watchers’ observe the group through the mirrored window of the Coop every night.
Madeline explains the rules to Mina: at night the Watchers kill anyone outside the Coop, and nobody must enter the Burrows, the subterranean tunnels where the Watchers retreat during the day because of their aversion to sunlight. The group has been stranded in the forest for several months without encountering a Watcher.
As winter falls, the group begins to turn hostile against one another. Daniel locks Mina and Madeline out of the Coop one night, forcing them to seek shelter in the forest. They witness the Watchers, humanoid creatures that imitate the Coop’s occupants and react angrily to Madeline and Mina’s absence.
The next day, the group follows the professor’s directions and uses Darwin to guide them to the river at the edge of the forest. On the way, Madeline shows them a stone marker, explaining that humans had warred against the Fairies, who were deprived of their wings, driven underground, and imprisoned in the forest.
This forest isn’t charted on any map. Every car breaks down at its treeline. Mina’s is no different. Left stranded, she is forced into the dark woodland only to find a woman shouting, urging Mina to run to a concrete bunker. As the door slams behind her, the building is besieged by screams.
Mina finds herself in a room with a wall of glass, and an electric light that activates at nightfall, when the Watchers come above ground. These creatures emerge to observe their captive humans and terrible things happen to anyone who doesn’t reach the bunker in time.
MY THOUGHTS ON THE WATCHERS
If you’re into spooky movies that keep you guessing, The Watchers might just be your next obsession. I did not like every aspect of it but… it’s manageable. It’s not outrightly terrible but it’s not good either. Directed by Ishana Night Shyamalan, this film is filled with suspense and mystery.
A dense forest in Ireland, strange creatures everywhere, and a group of people stuck in a bunker with only a one-way window separating them from the unknown.
CHARACTER PERFORMANCES
Let’s talk about the characters. The lead, Mina, played by Dakota Fanning, is a young artist who somehow ends up in the middle of nowhere in Ireland. Fanning brings a quiet intensity to her role, making Mina both relatable and intriguing.
But here’s the thing — the supporting cast feels a bit flat. They’re like those background characters in video games that repeat the same line over and over. You kind of wish they’d do more, you know? Their reactions and decisions sometimes don’t make sense, which can be frustrating when you’re rooting for them to survive.
VISUAL DESIGN AND CINEMATOGRAPHY
Visually, this movie is a treat. The forest scenes are super creepy, using shadows and flickering lights to keep you on edge. It’s like playing hide and seek in the dark, and you never know what’s around the corner.
The inside of the bunker contrasts sharply with the forest, using warm lights to create a false sense of safety. It’s pretty cool how the film makes you feel trapped and isolated, just like the characters. It is also important to note that the CGI for the creatures isn’t always the best.
Sometimes it looks like those early 2000s video games. If only they had included a lot more details about the creature to make them more realistic and maybe more terrifying.
WRITING STYLE AND STORY
Now, onto the story. The plot takes off with Mina stranded and seeking refuge in a bunker with three strangers. The concept is solid and the setting is perfect for a horror movie. However, the pacing can be slow, with long dialogue scenes that don’t add much to the character development.
It’s like waiting for something exciting to happen in a series, but you keep getting filler episodes. The big twist at the end is supposed to be a jaw-dropper, but it feels more like a forced surprise rather than a natural conclusion.
THEMES
The Watchers dives into themes of survival, fear of the unknown, and human instinct. It also touches on personal trauma, specifically Mina’s childhood issues, but this feels a bit tacked on rather than woven into the story.
The film tries to explore how people react under pressure and the lengths they’ll go to stay alive. It’s interesting, but it could’ve been developed more.

The Watchers is indeed that kind of story that mr Shyamalan had probably told to his daughter when she was a child ☺️ you can feel it.

The movie was really enjoyable, not a masterpiece but quite good, all the elements of her father’s narrative are there: myth, fable with a vein… pic.twitter.com/NevUkiBoRd
CONCLUSION
In the end, The Watchers is a mixed bag. It has a gripping setup, a creepy atmosphere, and some genuinely scary moments. Dakota Fanning shines as Mina, but the rest of the characters don’t quite hit the mark. The film’s visuals are striking, though some of the CGI falls short.
The story has potential, but the pacing and twist leave something to be desired. If you’re into horror with a mix of mystery and don’t mind a few flaws, give this one a go. It’s not perfect, but it’s a decent way to spend an evening. Plus, it might just inspire you to read the book it’s based on for a more fleshed-out experience.
