INTRODUCTION
“My Spy: The Eternal City” (2024) is a spy comedy movie directed by Pete Segal, who also co-wrote the script with Jon and Eric Hoeber.
This sequel to the 2020 film “My Spy” brings back Dave Bautista, Chloe Coleman, Kristen Schaal, and Ken Jeong in their original roles. New cast members include Flula Borg, Craig Robinson, and Anna Faris.
The film hit U.S. screens on July 18, 2024, and carries a PG-13 rating due to its mix of action, some strong language, suggestive references, teen drinking, and a nude sculpture. It has a runtime of 1 hour and 53 minutes.
WHAT IS THE SPY: THE ETERNAL CITY ABOUT?
JJ, the unlikely CIA agent with a heart of gold is with his stepdaughter Sophie who swaps Eastern Europe for the sunny streets of Rome, Italy.
JJ is looking forward to a relaxing trip, but things quickly change when he has to chaperone Sophie’s high school choir trip. Managing a group of teenagers obsessed with their phones and lacking in singing talent is a challenge in itself.
But the real trouble starts when JJ and Sophie uncover a plot to cause chaos at the Vatican. A cunning villain is hiding among the tourists, and JJ must spring into action with Sophie as his unexpected but clever partner.
The adventure takes them through Rome’s iconic locations, including a thrilling chase in the Colosseum and blending in with street performers. There are plenty of laugh-out-loud moments like JJ trying to understand teenage slang and learn how to use social media.
Despite the chaos, JJ and Sophie grow closer, using their unique skills to outsmart the bad guys. Sophie uses her tech knowledge, while JJ shows his protective and supportive side.
Will they stop the villain’s plot and save the day? So, is it a hit that’ll make you crave more gelato? Or does it trip up a bit?
MY THOUGHTS ON MY SPY: THE ETERNAL CITY
“My Spy: The Eternal City” is a fun movie that will make you laugh, though some jokes might go over your head. It’s entertaining but doesn’t quite match up to the first film.
Just a heads-up, so you know what to expect. Don’t say I didn’t warn you!
CHARACTER PERFORMANCES
The best part of the original movie – the great chemistry between Dave Bautista’s tough but lovable CIA agent JJ and Chloe Coleman’s sharp Sophie – is back. They work together perfectly, making you believe they’re a really odd couple.
Kristen Schaal and Ken Jeong are back too, bringing their unique humor, especially in a funny scene involving pigeons.
There are also new faces like Anna Faris, who adds some extra fun to the story. Sophie even gets a love interest, which is cute but doesn’t add much to the plot.
Overall, the cast is great, but some new characters feel like missed opportunities.
VISUAL DESIGN AND CINEMATOGRAPHY
Let’s talk about the scenery! Italy is the real star here. The movie gives us a virtual tour of Rome with beautiful shots of the Colosseum, Trevi Fountain, and charming streets that make you want to grab a cappuccino and watch the world go by.
The action scenes are also well filmed, keeping things exciting without being too intense for younger viewers.
WRITING STYLE AND STORY
The plot is pretty predictable. There are the usual spy movie elements – bad guys with big plans, close escapes, and good guys saving the day at the last minute. It won’t win awards for originality, but sometimes you just want a fun movie to enjoy, right?
The movie keeps things moving with some genuinely funny moments. Just be ready for a few classic “hero gets a burst of strength just in time” scenes. But that’s part of the silly charm of this kind of movie, isn’t it?
THEMES
Beneath all the action and humor, “My Spy: The Eternal City” has a heart. It reminds us about the importance of family (even the one you choose, like JJ and Sophie), trusting friends, and working together. There’s also a message about balancing a crazy spy life with maybe having a normal life too.
AUDIENCE COMMENTS
My Spy The Eternal City is killing me. 😭😂

"My Spy: The Eternal City" is just bad and boring. Dave Bautista looked tired and acted like he was tired. Flula Borg was fun as the baddie. The rest of the cast just hobbled along. Story was one in a dozen. 2/5

CONCLUSION
So, is “My Spy: The Eternal City” a must-watch? If you liked the first movie, you’ll probably enjoy this one too. It’s a fun, light-hearted adventure with some great laughs and beautiful views of Italy.
However, it’s not perfect. The plot is a bit predictable, some new characters feel forgettable, and the jokes can be hit-or-miss. Just remember to relax.
It’s a perfect movie for a cozy night in, especially if you’re dreaming of an Italian adventure without the hassle of traveling.
