The tragic death of platinum-selling rapper Rich Homie Quan has left the city of Atlanta with a source of grief, as he died unexpectedly on Thursday morning. The artist behind a string of infectious hits and style unlike any other, 34-year-old Dequantes Devontay Lamar reportedly died at his home in Atlanta according to both his family and the Fulton County morgue.
With the instant hit single “Type of Way” in 2013, this rapper burst onto the scene, making him an instant household name within the hip-hop community. He followed up with top-charting hits such as “Flex (Ooh, Ooh, Ooh)” and “Ride Out,” placing him among Atlanta’s most beloved musicians. His collaborations with trendy artists like Young Thug on the Cash Money Records project “Rich Gang” and routine releases with Atlanta rap legends such as 2 Chainz and Jacquees further managed to seal his influence within the industry.
Quan’s family is heartbroken and has let TMZ know just how much his sudden death has left them shattered. While no cause of death has been officially reported, rumors have been flying through the music world, especially since fellow rapper Boosie BadAzz-one of the first to report the death-hinted at an overdose. On X, an emotional Boosie posted, he even insinuated at what may have been the suspected cause in another post.

Meanwhile, Quan’s family is yet to have their questions answered as they mourn the loss of a dear one. His fans and fellow artists have paid their tributes. Adam Grandmaison, otherwise known as Adam22, an Instagram user, wrote a post in memoriam of Quan. It was a photo of himself and Quan with a simple message, “RIP Rich Homie Quan“.
Quan’s contribution to hip-hop is unparalleled. From rising through the ranks in Atlanta, from the dirt and grime to being part of the city’s new school, he was always about some sort of fuss being made. The New York Times once described him this way: as part of Atlanta’s rising generation of rappers. That perfectly described the artiste who could glide between street anthems and introspective tracks with a similar type of grace.
Despite his successes, the struggles were very real for Quan. Throughout 2017, he was to face felony drug possession charges with the intent to distribute; however, the case was dropped due to a lack of evidence. While publicly battling the law at that time, there were a lot of rumors regarding his lifestyle, but none appeared to slow his musical career. In fact, his new single “Ah’Chi,” with 2 Chainz, had just been working its way through the circuits, proving that his artistry was potent as ever right up until his untimely end.
Just weeks back, Rich Homie Quan was set to take the stage for Nick Cannon’s Wild N Out show in Atlanta alongside heavyweights like Wacka Flocka and Nardo Wick. His death came as a shock, bringing into that show an absence that will decidedly turn into a memorial of the artist who helped shape the sound of modern-day Atlanta rap.
It was an unbelievable turn of events: Quan’s death was just days from the rap world losing another star, Fatman Scoop, who collapsed tragically on stage at 53. Scoop’s death and Quan’s passing have really cast some dark clouds over the hip-hop world and were real wake-up calls to all fans and artists of how fragile life can be.
As if scrolling through Quan’s last Instagram post, shared just days before his death, fans are struck by poignancy upon landing on his words: “Vision clear even through the BS .” It is a haunting reminder of the struggles he may face behind closed doors.
With no official cause of death confirmed and online speculation rife with rumors, the exact circumstances surrounding Rich Homie Quan’s passing remain unclear. What is for sure, though, is that his music, style, and energy touched the hip-hop landscape in a way that can never be erased.
R.I.P. Rich Homie Quan – a talent taken too soon, but never forgotten.
