Introduction

Prey (2022) is an American action thriller science fiction film based on the Predator film series. It is the fifth installment in the series and a prequel to the first four films, taking place on the Northern Great Plains of North America in 1719. Prey is directed by Dan Trachtenberg, the director of 10 Cloverflield Lane (2016), and released by Hulu.

Synopsis

When a Comanche town is attacked by a humanoid alien predator, Naru, a brave young girl healer, steps up to save her tribe.

Review

In the opening scene of Prey, Naru is trying to hunt down a White-tailed deer in the broad plains of North America when the roaring sound from the sky interrupts her. The deer flees due to the loud noise, and when Naru tries to catch up with it, she observes a “thunderbird” flying over the sky. When she told her brother Taabe that she had seen a sign, the thunderbird, he dismissed her words. Taabe and the hunters see Naru as a healer or assistant around the house rather than a hunter. It is thought that if one sees the thunderbird, they are prepared for their ‘Kuhtaamia’.

Because Naru is so intelligent, observant, and ambitious, she sought to dispel the myth that she cannot become a hunter. One of the tribesmen was taken captive by a lion, and hunters went in search without her. Despite this, she followed and was permitted to join the hunters because of her adept tracking abilities. She demonstrates her worth by finding the victim and giving him medicine.

She sets out with the other hunters to find the lion. Still, while she searches, she witnesses several unusual occurrences that raise her suspicions about the existence of an alien predator. Despite this, she continues to pursue the lion. Sadly for her, she was unable to kill the lion.

Naru Fighting against the Predator

Despite her brother’s cautions, she ventures with her dog – Sarii to learn more about this sophisticated extra-terrestrial predator. She intends to embark on a perilous expedition. What fate awaits her and her town? Will she become the predator’s next victim?

Prey is a unique science fiction horror movie with a lot to teach us. The value of determination, patience, and the traits of courage and ambition. Another lesson that can be drawn from this film is the significance of self-worth and self-esteem.

The performance of Amber Midthunder impressed me. This film demonstrates Amber’s skill and ability as an actress. She was excellent in her role, with her body language and facial expressions conveying the appropriate emotions. Her action scenes were also amazing. It is evident that this role required a lot of practice.

Prey stars The Walking Dead actor Dane DiLiegro, who fantastically portrays the predator. DiLeigro is one of the tallest actors in Hollywood and stands at a very tall height. His height of 6 feet 9 inches makes it evident that he was chosen for this position. Although Dane’s face was not seen nor his voice heard during the film, his performance was excellent. Through profound nonverbal interpretation, he captured the essence of a varmint. He exhibited unbridled emotion and great strength as well.

Sarii, the dog, is another character that I found impressive. A real dog named Coco played Sarii. Due to my love of dogs, Coco won my heart in this film. Although she only had a small amount of screen time, she did an excellent job in her roles.

The scores and soundtracks were outstanding, and the makeup artist performed excellently.

The action scenes were fantastic, especially when the Dane had to battle a Bear. This scene appeared to be real. Excellent work.

This movie was excellent, in my opinion. Not often do we see a sci-fi horror film as fantastic as this. Therefore we must give credit to the director, scriptwriter, and everyone involved in this creation.

Because of the blood and violence, I only suggest this movie to sci-fi, horror, and thriller enthusiasts over the age of 16. Almost everybody would like to watch this movie.
