INTRODUCTION
Bill Paxton, who looked like a less cool Keanu Reeves, had a crazy idea: a Twister sequel so intense it would make a hurricane seem calm.
He wanted to recreate the Tri-State Tornado, the biggest twister ever, and make it look so real you’d be terrified. With his friend James Cameron, they planned a 3D movie that would be amazing to watch. But then, Hollywood ran out of money, and Paxton passed away.
Twisters (2024) is a disaster film that serves as a standalone sequel to the iconic 1996 blockbuster. Directed by Lee Isaac Chung, known for his drama Minari, the film takes a different approach to the tornado genre, with a screenplay by Mark L. Smith, based on an original story by Joseph Kosinski.
The film featured a talented cast, including the rising stars Daisy Edgar-Jones and Glen Powell, alongside Anthony Ramos and Brandon Perea.
Released by Universal Pictures on July 19, 2024. With a runtime of two hours and two minutes, the film delivers non-stop action, suspense, and emotional depth. However, be warned: the intense visuals of nature’s fury, coupled with some strong language and depictions of injuries, make it unsuitable for young viewers.
Twisters is rated PG-13 for its mature content.
WHAT IS TWISTERS ABOUT? PLOT/SYNOPSIS
Kate used to hunt storms in Oklahoma. She worked with a team that included her boyfriend. They tried a crazy idea to make tornadoes weaker by shooting stuff into them. Unfortunately, a really big and scary tornado came, and most of her team died. It was a terrible time, and Kate was heartbroken.
Years later, Kate was working a safe job far away. But then, a friend from the past asked her to come back to Oklahoma to help with a new plan to track tornadoes. Reluctantly, she agreed.
When she got back, she found that things had changed. There were new people chasing storms, including a famous guy who made videos online. Kate didn’t like him much at first.
They all started chasing storms together, and it was dangerous. There were close calls, arguments, and even more sadness. But there was also hope. Kate started to remember why she loved chasing storms in the first place. She realized that she might be able to use what she learned before to try and stop tornadoes again.
With the help of some new friends, Kate decided to give it another shot. But this time, things were different. The storms were getting stronger, and it was clear that they were facing a bigger challenge than ever before.
Would they be able to stop the storms? Or would they be caught in their path once again?
MY THOUGHTS ON “TWISTERS”
I recently watched “Twisters,” the sequel to the classic 1996 movie “Twister,” and I have to say, I was pleasantly surprised. Going into it, I wasn’t sure if it would live up to the original, but it turned out to be a really fun and entertaining experience.
This movie is full of action, great chemistry between the characters, and some impressive visual effects. Let me break down my thoughts into different sections for you.
CHARACTER PERFORMANCE
One of the best things about “Twisters” is the cast. Daisy Edgar-Jones and Glen Powell play the main characters, and they have fantastic chemistry on screen. Their relationship feels natural and well-developed, which adds a lot to the movie.
The side characters are also interesting and well-fleshed out, making the whole group feel like a real team. The cast works well together, and their interactions are smooth and entertaining. The jokes in the script land well because of their great timing and delivery, adding some humor and charm to the movie.
VISUAL DESIGN AND CINEMATOGRAPHY
The special effects in “Twisters” are top-notch. The tornado scenes are intense and look very realistic. There are only a few moments where you can tell some CGI was used, but overall, it feels quite real.
The cinematography is also beautiful, with some lovely, quiet moments that give you a chance to catch your breath between the action scenes.
The movie has a good mix of breathtaking tornado moments and more peaceful, visually striking scenes that make it enjoyable to watch on the big screen.
WRITING STYLE AND STORY
The plot of “Twisters” is pretty light, but it’s very entertaining. The movie handles the science of tornadoes and the idea of potentially disrupting them much better than the original. The story is clear from the beginning and throughout the film.
However, there is a small subplot involving a group called Storm Par and their investors that feels a bit unnecessary. It doesn’t hurt the film, but it also doesn’t add much to it. Despite this minor flaw, the story is still a lot of fun and perfect for a summer blockbuster.
THEMES
“Twisters” has a mix of themes, from action and adventure to romance and humor. Although it’s billed as a disaster film, it has a lot of romcom energy.
The relationship between the main characters adds romance to the movie, and their chemistry makes the slower moments work well.
The film also explores themes of teamwork and resilience, as the characters come together to face the tornadoes. The movie strikes a good balance between serious moments and lighter, more humorous scenes, making it an enjoyable watch for a wide audience.

Okay soo when the Twisters want to blow up a power station it's "cool" and "a cinematic experience", but when *I* want to blow up a power station it's "too radical an agenda" and "won't help my cause" 🙄

CONCLUSION
The question on everyone’s lips is whether Twisters can truly outdo the iconic 1996 original.
With advancements in technology and storytelling, the potential for a more thrilling and immersive experience is undeniable. But can a sequel capture the same magic that made the first film a cultural phenomenon?
Twisters certainly has the opportunity to deliver on a grander scale, with more spectacular visual effects and potentially more complex characters. However, it’s the heart and soul of the original that truly resonated with audiences.
Can the new film match the emotional depth and relatability of the characters in the first film? In my opinion, “Twisters” is a really fun movie that’s slightly better than the original 1996 film but only time will tell if Twisters can truly be considered an improvement over its predecessor.
While the bigger and badder aspects are promising, it’s the “better” part of the equation that will ultimately determine its success.
Twisters (2024) might not be perfect, with some predictable moments and a minor subplot that could be cut, but it’s still a great time at the movies.
If you enjoy disaster films, romcoms, or just a good summer blockbuster, I highly recommend seeing “Twisters” on the big screen. It’s worth the ticket price.
