DANIELLE FISHEL OF BOY MEETS WORLD REVEALS EARLY-STAGE BREAST CANCER DIAGNOSIS AT 43
Danielle Fishel, best known as Topanga Lawrence on the beloved 1990s sitcom Boy Meets World, recently shared some challenging news about her health.
On the August 19th episode of her podcast Pod Meets World, the 43-year-old actress revealed that she has been diagnosed with ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS), a non-invasive form of breast cancer that is often referred to as stage 0 breast cancer.
A BRAVE HEALTH UPDATE SHARED WITH FANS
Fishel began the podcast episode with a personal message to her listeners, stating, “I would like to share something with our listeners… I was recently diagnosed with DCIS, which is a form of breast cancer.”
The actress, who co-hosts the podcast with fellow Boy Meets World stars Rider Strong and Will Friedle, took a moment to explain the gravity of her diagnosis.
“It is very, very, very early. It’s technically stage zero,” Fishel continued.
“To be specific, I was diagnosed with high-grade DCIS with micro invasion. And I’m going to be fine, I’m having surgery to remove it.” Despite the daunting news, Fishel’s tone remained positive and reassuring as she discussed her upcoming surgery and follow-up treatment.
She also mentioned that her podcast schedule might need to be adjusted while she undergoes treatment.
WHAT IS DCIS?
Ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS) is a non-invasive form of breast cancer that starts in the milk ducts and has not spread to surrounding breast tissue. According to the American Cancer Society, about 1 in 5 new breast cancer cases will be DCIS, and nearly all women diagnosed with this condition can be cured.
However, Fishel’s specific diagnosis of high-grade DCIS with micro invasion means that the abnormal cells are more aggressive and have begun slightly invading the surrounding tissues, though the invasion is minimal.
The National Cancer Institute notes that high-grade DCIS tends to grow more quickly and is more likely to recur or progress to invasive breast cancer than lower grades. This underscores the importance of Fishel’s early detection, which likely played a critical role in her positive prognosis.
THE IMPORTANCE OF EARLY DETECTION
One of the key messages Fishel wanted to convey through her public disclosure was the importance of regular health check-ups, particularly mammograms. She shared that the only reason her cancer was detected so early was that she made the appointment as soon as she received a reminder for her yearly mammogram.
“The fact that I am good about going to my doctor’s appointments when, truthfully, it would be so much easier with as busy as I am… it would be so easy to say, ‘I don’t have time for that. I went to my mammogram last year, and I was fine…’ And I didn’t… and they found it so early that I’m going to be fine,” Fishel explained.
OVERCOMING INITIAL FEARS AND SHARING HER STORY
Fishel also reflected on her initial instinct to keep her diagnosis private. “For some reason, I had always thought [if I were diagnosed with cancer] I would suffer in silence. I would get the diagnosis, I would not tell anyone,” she admitted. “I would tell only my small group, and then I would just suck it up. And then when I’m on the other side of it, I would tell people.”
However, after speaking with others who had gone through similar experiences, Fishel realized the value of sharing her story from the beginning.
“The place you have the most to learn from is at the very beginning of a story or in the messy middle of a story,” she said. The support she received from her close friends and family encouraged her to open up publicly, with the hope that her story might inspire others to take their health seriously and schedule regular screenings.
DANIELLE FISHEL’S CAREER AND LIFE TODAY
Danielle Fishel’s revelation about her breast cancer diagnosis comes at a time when she is juggling multiple responsibilities, including her career, family, and podcast.
Best known for her role as Topanga Lawrence on Boy Meets World, a character she began portraying at just 12 years old, Fishel has grown from a child star into a multi-talented professional.
Over the years, she has expanded her career beyond acting to include directing and writing. In recent years, she has focused on directing and co-writing several kid-friendly projects that are close to her heart.
Fishel is also a mother of two, sharing sons Adler Lawrence Karp and Keaton Joseph Karp with her husband Jensen Karp. Despite her busy schedule, which she humorously describes as “50 jobs,” Fishel emphasizes the importance of prioritizing health.
Her experience underscores the reality that even the most packed schedules should not push aside critical health check-ups.
THE IMPACT OF BOY MEETS WORLD AND TOPANGA LAWRENCE
Fishel’s portrayal of Topanga Lawrence on Boy Meets World has left a lasting impact on fans.
Topanga, initially introduced as a quirky and intelligent girl, became one of the central characters as the show progressed, eventually marrying Cory Matthews, played by Ben Savage. The chemistry between Fishel and Savage on screen led many fans to wonder if the two were ever romantically involved in real life.
In a 2022 interview, Fishel clarified that although they shared a close bond, they never dated in real life.
“No, we never dated,” Fishel shared, though she did admit that after playing childhood sweethearts on the show, they did try to give it a shot with a single date. However, their relationship remained strictly professional, allowing them to maintain a strong friendship over the years.
ENCOURAGING REGULAR SCREENINGS AND HEALTH AWARENESS
Fishel’s decision to go public with her diagnosis highlights the importance of health awareness and early detection. She hopes that by sharing her story, she can encourage others to prioritize their health and schedule regular screenings, whether for breast cancer or other conditions like prostate cancer and colon cancer.
Her co-hosts, Rider Strong and Will Friedle, who played Shawn and Eric on Boy Meets World, have voiced their support for Fishel during this challenging time. They have also used the platform to remind listeners about the importance of regular check-ups and early detection.
Fishel’s message is clear: If it’s time for your appointment, or if you’ve never had one, get in there. Early detection can make all the difference, as it did in her case. “If you have to find out you have cancer, find out when it’s at stage zero, if possible,” Fishel advised her listeners.
WHAT’S NEXT FOR DANIELLE FISHEL?
While Fishel has some big decisions ahead regarding her treatment, she remains optimistic. She acknowledged that she doesn’t have all the answers yet and still has to meet with various specialists, including oncologists, radiation specialists, and hormone therapists.
However, she is confident that with the early detection of her cancer, she will be able to manage the treatment effectively and come out stronger on the other side.
Fishel’s story serves as an inspiration, not just for her fans, but for anyone facing health challenges. Her openness and honesty about her diagnosis and treatment process are a reminder of the importance of early detection and the power of sharing one’s journey.
By speaking out, Fishel is helping to raise awareness and encourage others to take proactive steps in managing their health.
