INTRODUCTION
The movie takes place in a time when men’s pants were really high-waisted, almost at their belly buttons. Because of that, the actors playing NASA guys (especially background characters) had to wear their shirts tucked in super low to look right.
It got annoying because some actors moved around a lot during filming, so the costume department had to keep tucking their shirts back in between takes.
By the end of filming, the extras were so tired of getting tucked in that they all thanked the costume department for their hard work!
Fly Me to the Moon (2024) is a romantic comedy drama film directed by Greg Berlanti from a screenplay by Rose Gilroy.

It is rated PG-13 and has a runtime of approximately 2 hours and 15 minutes
WHAT IS ‘FLY ME TO THE MOON’ ABOUT? PLOT/SYNOPSIS
In the midst of the 1960s space race, NASA is gearing up for the Apollo 11 mission: landing the first humans on the moon. The pressure is on for launch director Cole (played by Channing Tatum). He’s dedicated and serious, laser-focused on ensuring the mission’s success.
Suddenly, his world gets a whole lot more colorful with the arrival of Kelly (played by Scarlett Johansson).
She’s a whiz-bang marketing whizz brought in to boost NASA’s public image. Kelly is energetic, creative, and a stark contrast to Cole’s by-the-book approach.
Sparks are bound to fly as these two very different personalities clash over how to handle the immense public interest in the mission.
Meanwhile, there’s a lot at stake.
The United States is locked in a heated competition with the Soviet Union to reach the moon first. Public opinion and funding are crucial, and Kelly believes NASA needs a more exciting way to capture the world’s imagination.
This throws Cole into a tailspin – his focus is purely on the technical success of the mission, and Kelly’s flashy ideas feel frivolous.
As the launch date approaches, Kelly and Cole are forced to work together.
Kelly’s enthusiasm is infectious, and Cole starts to see the value in her approach. They develop a plan to not only ensure a successful mission but also create a captivating story for the public to follow.
There’s also a dash of mystery with the involvement of Moe (played by Woody Harrelson), a shadowy government agent with his agenda.
His presence adds a layer of intrigue and keeps the audience guessing about what might happen behind the scenes.
Through it all, the film captures the excitement and tension of the space race. We see the dedication of the astronauts, the tireless work of the engineers, and the immense public anticipation for this historic event.
MY THOUGHTS ON ‘FLY ME TO THE MOON‘
When I saw the trailer for “Fly Me to the Moon,” I thought it looked like it would be fun, but I wasn’t sure if it would be good. After watching the movie, I can say it was a delightful surprise!
The film’s blend of romance, comedy, and historical drama makes it unique and entertaining.
CHARACTER PERFORMANCE
The movie stars Scarlett Johansson and Woody Harrelson, and they fit the story well. Scarlett Johansson plays Kelly, and she’s fantastic! She’s full of life and energy in every scene, which makes you want to root for her.
Woody Harrelson plays Moe, a kind of secretive government guy.
Their scenes together are some of the best parts of the movie, they bounce off each other well.
Channing Tatum plays the other lead role, but it seems like they maybe didn’t pick the perfect part for him. His character feels a bit like a modern guy who accidentally got stuck in the 1960s.
There’s even a funny bit where he wears shirts that look like something out of Star Trek! Even though he feels a little out of place, the three main actors all have good chemistry together and their performances are still fun to watch.
VISUAL DESIGN AND CINEMATOGRAPHY
The movie looks amazing! They did a fantastic job bringing the 1960s back to life. Everything feels clean and stylish, but also a little old-fashioned in a cool way, just like it was back then.
They even mix in some real footage from that time with the movie scenes, which makes it feel like you’re watching the Apollo 11 launch happen all over again for the very first time.
The sets they built look great, the clothes the actors wear are perfect for the time, and everything about how the movie looks was planned very carefully.
If you get the chance, definitely see this movie on the biggest screen you can find so you can appreciate all the cool visuals!
WRITING STYLE AND STORY
The film’s writing style blends romance, comedy, and historical drama. It focuses on Kelly, hired to publicize NASA and save the space program. She works with Cole, the Apollo 11 launch director, who is against the whole idea.
The story is unique and fun, but it tries to be too many things at once, making the tone and pacing a bit jarring. Despite this, the film remains entertaining and heartfelt.
The script also includes some great backstories for the characters, adding depth to the narrative.
THEMES
“Fly Me to the Moon” explores several themes, including romance, ambition, and the power of marketing.
The film highlights how important the Apollo 11 mission was for NASA and America. It also shows the lengths people will go to achieve their goals, even if it means faking a moon landing.
The romance between Kelly and Cole adds a personal touch to the story, making it relatable and engaging.
AUDIENCE COMMENTS
Fly Me to the Moon is a great film! Not the standard romcom I expected. In fact, not a romcom. So many good actors.
