JOHN WICK: CHAPTER 4 FILM REVIEW.
If you’ve watched the previous John Wick movies, you’ll discover that they usually start with action scenes, and John Wick 4 is no different. It begins with the titular character John Wick chasing and shooting at some men working for the High Table down a desert. Those men lead John to The Elder (George Georgiou), one of the leaders of the High Table.
As John approaches The Elder, The Elder says, “Mister Wick, to what do I owe this pleasure.” In his sincerity and humility, John Wick asks for freedom from the High Table as he is tired of the life he chose in the past. John is then told a bitter truth, that he can only get freedom in death.
Back in New York, a messenger delivers a letter/decree signed by the 12 membersof the Table to Mr. Winston, the caretaker of the Continental Hotel, asking him to vacate the property in 1 hour. The messenger also requests the presence of Winston as Marquis, who is now the Judge, the Jury, and so much more assigned to him by the High Table, wants to see him.
Winston honors this request and pleads for a second chance, but rather than his request being granted, he is declared an ‘excommunicado,’ his Hotel is blown to pieces, and his Concierge is killed in cold blood. You can see from Winston’s face that he is so pained, but he is old and powerless, so there’s not much he can do.
Caine (Donnie Yen), a retired blind fighter, is beckoned upon and given a deal by Marquis to kill John Wick in exchange for his daughter’s freedom. Recall that John is Caine’s friend and ex-partner, so this deal is difficult to accept, but as expected, Caine picks his daughter over the deadly Wick, saying, ‘I will serve, I will be of service.’
John Wick comes to Asia to seek help from his friend who runs the Hotel there, but instead, he is traced down by the High Table and has to escape for his life.
A man Nobody is brought before Marquis to help track and kill John Wick, but he’d do that at a price of 25 million and a pension. He heads out to follow Wick, who goes to visit Winston who was paying his tribute to Charon (Lance Reddick), his Concierge.
John needs help on how to get out under the Table, and Winston full of knowledge provides him with one of the best advice he has ever received. Initially, John Wick needed to find someone, but the only clue they had was a crest. Winston tells him who owns the crest and where to find the owner in Paris. John then decides to head there and kill the crest bearer Le Marquis De Gramot (Bill Skarsgård) but is stopped on his way by Winston, who advises him that rather than Kill Le Marquis de Cramot, he should turn the rule of the Table against him, that is – invite him to a duel and whoever wins, gets what he wants.
This advice gives John an idea of what to do. Can John defeat Marquis, who has all the resources and people he needs, or is this the final bus top for Wick?
Now, what do I think about the film?
John wick is perfect. Let me not get too ahead of myself; it is almost perfect, with few to zero flaws. The action scenes are complex though is made to seem smooth sailing but the director, and the actors.
Do you know what I like about the action scenes? It is its beauty and humor. It is entertaining, intriguing, and funny. Something like what Jackie Chan does in his fight scenes, how fun he makes them. A replication of that was attempted here.
The director and cinematographer outdid themselves with this film, including the actors and actresses. What a fantastic performance from the all-round cast.
As seen in the previous Chapters, John is not a talker. He is brief with his words, and as Viggo Tarasov (Michael Nyqvist) in chapter 1 says, ‘John is not a man to waste words.‘ John barely exceeds 400 words in Chapter 4, yet he still manages to pass his point across. I enjoy every dialogue as the casts say very little but lets their actions do most of the talking.
The suspense and twists in this film deserve to be talked about. It keeps you glued to the screen, wanting all the details. I love that. I watched this film with pure focus, and I loved it. This franchise is creeping into one of the best franchises of the century.
I also loved the cinematography, it was impressive. Very good close-up and long shots that captures all the action to help you understand the film more. The sound and scores too were great.
The sound and songs were also good; the make-up artist did an excellent and realistic job.
DID YOU KNOW?
According to IMDB, Lance Reddick stars as Charon, Mr. Winston’s Concierge, finished his part in John Wick 4 before his sad death one week before the film’s premiere on March 17, 2023. Keanu Reeves and the film’s other stars donned blue ribbons to memorialize the late Reddick at the premiere.
CONCLUSION.
John Wick: Chapter 4 is an entertaining and enjoyable film, one you can watch with friends. It has humor, suspense, twists, action, and so on. All you’ll expect from a good movie is here though romance is missing.
I’d advise anyone who would love to see this fantastic franchise to start from Chapter 1 so they can understand the movie and its characters, find out why things happen as they do and the reason romance is not seen in John Wick 4.
I feel there might be a John Wick 5, but according to the director, he says “John Wick and I are through for the time being“, but let’s see what happens in the future.
I recommend this film to anyone with action and neo-noir film lovers above the age of 16. John Wick: Chapter 4 is Rated R for pervasive solid violence and some language.
