INTRODUCTION.
Barbie (2023) is a live-action fantasy comedy film directed by Greta Gerwig, who also wrote it with Noah Baumbach. It features an ensemble cast, including America Ferrera, Kate McKinnon, Issa Rae, Rhea Perlman, and Will Ferrell.
Back in 2009, a Barbie movie was in the works with Universal Pictures, but it didn’t happen. Then, in 2014, Sony Pictures joined the project and made some changes to the team. After a few twists and turns, Margot Robbie became the driving force behind the movie, pitching it to Warner Bros. She even compared it to Jurassic Park and joked about it making a billion dollars!
Margot approached Greta Gerwig to write the screenplay, and Gerwig’s partner, Noah Baumbach, formed an excellent team to bring Barbie’s story to life on the big screen!
Barbie was released on the 21st of July, and it runs for a little more than 1 hour and 30 minutes.
SYNOPSIS.
Barbie – To live in Barbie Land is to be a perfect being in an ideal place. Unless you have a full-on existential crisis. Or you’re a Ken.
BARBIE FILM REVIEW.
“Barbie has a great day everyday but Ken only has a great day when Barbie looks at him.”
Welcome to Barbie Land, an enchanting world where Barbie and Ken coexist perfectly? No, not perfectly but they coexist. This idyllic place caters to the desires of the Barbie, making their dreams come true and ensuring happiness and success abound. In the morning, we hear the cheerful greetings exchanged, “Hi Barbie,” and “Hi Barbie,” between the Barbie and other Barbies and Kens and the Barbies.
Among the Kens is Beach Ken, who seems to have a particular fascination with Barbie. He goes to great lengths to impress her, going as far as risking injury in his attempts to catch her attention. This infatuation led to a potential conflict between the two Kens, but Barbie wisely intervened to prevent quarrels.
“Hi Barbie, can I come to your house tonight?” asks Beach Ken, a glimmer of excitement in his eyes as he crosses his fingers, secretly hoping for a positive response. And to his delight, Barbie agrees! She happily informs him that there’s a party exclusively for Barbies, making the prospect even more thrilling for Beach Ken.
The dance party was in full swing, with everyone enjoying themselves, until Barbie unexpectedly brought up a rather heavy topic, asking, “Have anyone ever had thoughts about death?” The atmosphere instantly turned severe as the room fell silent, and all eyes fixed on Barbie, taken aback by her unusual question.
Feeling the weight of everyone’s intense gaze, Barbie quickly realized she had unintentionally damaged the mood. Trying to lighten the mood and recover from the awkward moment, she improvised by saying with a playful smile, “I am just dying to dance!” Her attempt to inject humor into the situation garnered a few chuckles, but the awkwardness still lingered.
Despite the hiccup, the dance resumed, and the party continued, but so did Barbie’s trouble.
The following day was a whirlwind for Barbie – like nothing she’d ever seen! She woke up feeling a bit grumpy, and to her surprise, all her usual lucky charms seemed to have taken a vacation. It was like they went on strike! To top it off, she discovered she now had flat feet!
Because of this unexpected change, she had no choice but to visit ‘Weird Barbie,’ who used to be the epitome of beauty until her owner got a little too carried away in the real world and played with her too roughly.
Once Barbie reached Weird Barbie’s quirky pad, she received some extraordinary advice – she was told to venture into the real world and locate her owner, whose mind was gradually becoming intertwined with Barbie’s. It was like a cosmic connection between humans and dolls! Weird Barbie shared her wisdom, saying that if Barbie wanted help, she’d have to lend a hand to her owner in return.
So, with excitement and reluctance, Barbie geared up for her grand adventure into the real world. But guess what? She couldn’t shake off Ken, who insisted on tagging along. Off they go, a dynamic duo ready to face the world together.
Ryan Gosling and Margot totally nailed it in their roles as Ken and Barbie respectively! They were a dynamic duo of awesomeness, bringing so much fun and laughter to the screen. Whenever they were together, it was like a non-stop comedy show – I couldn’t help but burst into laughter more often than not! Their on-screen chemistry was simply electric, and their synchronization was spot on!
Watching them in action was like witnessing a hilarious dance-off, each move perfectly complementing the other. Their magical connection made their scenes a pure delight to watch.
Barbie Land was an enchanting sight, brimming with vibrant colors I adored. It had a mesmerizing quality that made it seem both real and unreal at the same time. When you gazed upon its beauty, it appeared convincingly authentic, but as soon as you interacted with it, you couldn’t help but sense that it was merely a cleverly crafted movie set.
The cinematography in that movie was top-notch! They really nailed it with some fancy camera work, making every scene pop and come to life. It was like a visual feast that I couldn’t get enough of! And the costumes! Each character’s attire was on point, and so on-brand with their personalities.
The comedy and humor in this movie were a mixed bag for me. Sometimes, they hit the bullseye and had me laughing out loud, which was really lovely! But then there were other times when they missed the mark entirely, and I was left scratching my head, like, “What was that all about?”
Now, I understand it’s rated PG-13, so you expect some edgier humor, but there were moments when it felt like they crossed the line. Those jokes were more suited for a mature audience, different from what you’d expect in a family-friendly movie. I mean, we want to keep it light and fun!
One scene that had me raising an eyebrow was when a stranger decided to slap Barbie’s butt – like, seriously? Not cool! It felt out of place and unnecessary, and I couldn’t help but cringe.
But hey, that’s just my two cents on it. Comedy is subjective, right? Some jokes had us rolling in the aisles, while others made us do a double-take. It’s all part of the movie-watching experience!
I had an absolute blast watching this movie! The cinema was jam-packed with an enthusiastic crowd, and we all had a blast together. And let me tell you when those fantastic dance sequences kicked in, we couldn’t help but groove along in our seats, nodding our heads and tapping our feet – it was pure entertainment that kept us fully immersed in the film!
Don’t get me wrong, the movie had its shining moments, but something didn’t sit right with me. They portrayed men as sexual predators, leaving a sour taste in my mouth. Not only this, some awful portrayal of men filled this movie. Addressing severe issues is essential, but this aspect felt a bit overdone and uncomfortable.
On a brighter note, the film was a musical extravaganza with great songs that had us humming along even after we left the theater.
CONCLUSION.
Barbie is a fantastic comedy film that’s an absolute delight, especially for ladies! It’s a total joyride, packed with an incredible ensemble cast, and their performances are nothing short of impressive!
My takeaway from this film is that – both matriarchy and patriarchy don’t cut it anymore; they don’t favor the majority and are not as effective as we’d hope. It’s high time we strive for a world where we can all coexist, sharing equal opportunities and embracing unity.
Let’s break the barriers and create a future where everyone can thrive together!
