Lupita Nyong’o had a real-life monster to face before filming – cats! Can you believe it? She was terrified of them and wouldn’t even be in the same room! But guess what? Samira has a cat, and Lupita wanted the role.
So, what’s a tough actress to do? Enter cat therapy! Over several days, Lupita learned about cats, touched a few, and eventually became a really good cat-petter.
Now, let’s talk about the movie!
“A Quiet Place: Day One” (2024) is an apocalyptic horror film written and directed by Michael Sarnoski, based on a story he created with John Krasinski.
This is the third installment in the “A Quiet Place” film series, serving as a spin-off and prequel to the first film. It stars Lupita Nyong’o, Joseph Quinn, Alex Wolff, and Djimon Hounsou, who reprises his role from the second film.
“A Quiet Place: Day One” was released in the United States by Paramount Pictures on June 28, 2024. It has a runtime of 1 hour and 40 minutes and is rated PG-13 for terror, violent content, and bloody images.
WHAT IS A QUIET PLACE: DAY ONE ABOUT? SYNOPSIS / PLOT
Samira is a brave cancer patient living at a New York City hospice with her loyal cat, Frodo. One day, a care worker named Reuben persuades Samira to join a group outing to Manhattan.
The trip takes a thrilling turn when the group witnesses strange meteor-like objects crashing into the city. Soon after, hostile extraterrestrial creatures launch a fierce attack, plunging the city into chaos. In the frenzy, Samira is knocked unconscious.
When she awakens, Samira finds herself in a puppet theater with Frodo and other survivors.
The atmosphere is tense, and a fellow survivor named Henri silently signals her to stay quiet. Overhead, military helicopters broadcast urgent messages for civilians to remain silent and hidden, as the city’s bridges are bombed to trap the creatures.
Panic sets in when one of the survivors loses their cool, leading to a tragic accident involving Henri.
As Samira grapples with the loss of Reuben, she decides to leave for Harlem with Frodo. The military announces a plan to evacuate civilians by boat from the city’s south side, as the creatures can’t swim.
But as people flock to the evacuation point, the noise draws the creatures, resulting in a deadly stampede. In the chaos, Samira and Frodo are separated.
Eric, an English law student stumbles upon Frodo and follows him back to Samira. Despite Samira’s efforts to convince him to head to the evacuation point, a shell-shocked Eric joins her. Together, they return to her apartment in search of pain medication.
As they navigate the perilous streets of New York, dodging alien threats, they form an unlikely alliance. Eric bravely retrieves Sam’s medication from a nearby pharmacy, and the duo sets off for Harlem, hoping to find safety.
Can the city maintain its eerie silence? Will Sam and Eric (Joseph Quinn) manage to reach safety amidst the relentless alien invasion? Find out in A Quiet Place: Day One—just remember, whatever you do, don’t make a sound.
MY THOUGHTS ON “A QUIET PLACE: DAY ONE”
A Quiet Place: Day One is quite scary. According to Slate, it is even scarier than the original movie.
So, I just watched “A Quiet Place: Day One” and let me tell you, it was quite an interesting one! If you’re into sci-fi horror and love a good mix of action and suspense, this movie might just be for you. But don’t expect it to be exactly like the first two films – it’s got its own thing going on, which is both good and a bit disappointing in some ways.
Let’s dive into the details!
CHARACTER PERFORMANCES
Lupita Nyong’o, who plays Sam, is phenomenal. Her performance is full of emotion and depth, making her character one of the movie’s highlights.
Joseph Quinn, who plays Eric, also does a solid job, though his character feels a bit underdeveloped at times. And let’s not forget the adorable cat, Frodo, who surprisingly adds a lot of charm, “cuteness” and even some tension to the story.
If you’re a cat lover, you’ll appreciate Frodo’s role!
VISUAL DESIGN AND CINEMATOGRAPHY
The movie is set in New York City, which is a big change from the rural settings of the first two films. This new urban environment adds a fresh perspective and higher stakes since NYC is one of the busiest and loudest places on Earth.
The visual effects are a mixed bag – some scenes are stunning with great CGI, especially during the alien invasion, but a few moments look a bit off.
The sound design is incredible, though. It adds to the suspense and makes you feel like you’re right there with the characters, trying to stay silent and survive.
VISUAL DESIGN AND CINEMATOGRAPHY
The plot of “A Quiet Place: Day One” starts strong with an intense alien invasion in Manhattan. The first act is packed with action and solid character introductions. However, as the movie progresses, the focus shifts more to Sam’s quest – which, believe it or not, involves getting a slice of New York pizza.
This subplot feels a bit out of place and takes away from the larger story about the alien invasion. The pacing can be weird at times, and some parts of the script feel like they could have been developed more. But overall, it’s still a fun watch if you don’t take it too seriously.
THEMES
Unlike the first two movies, which focused a lot on family, “A Quiet Place: Day One” leans more towards individual survival and the chaos of an urban apocalypse. The theme of noise and silence is still central, and the film does a great job of showing how difficult it is to stay quiet in a bustling city.
There are also some heartfelt moments, though they don’t hit as hard as those in the earlier films. And if you love cats, you’ll appreciate the lighter, more humorous moments that Frodo brings to the table.

Went to see A Quiet Place: Day One yesterday. Walking Dead aside, I really don't get on with suspense horror apocalypse stuff. But it was brilliant, and the standout performance was from Frodo the cat…was fretting throughout that he wouldn't make it…but he did.

A Quiet Place was super good! I don’t even know if I’ll be the one that’ll just end it early on or try to get to freedom.

CONCLUSION
In the end, “A Quiet Place: Day One” is an interesting addition to the franchise. It offers a different take on the alien invasion with a unique setting and strong performances, especially from Lupita Nyong’o.
While it might not live up to the high expectations set by the first two movies, it’s still a decent sci-fi horror flick that delivers some fun and thrilling moments.
A Quiet Place might just be the scariest movie of 2024 so far!
It’s definitely a frontrunner, but we’ll have to see what other creepy films come out later this year. One thing’s for sure, A Quiet Place: Day One is a shoo-in for the top 10 scariest movies of the year.
If you’re a fan of the series, give it a watch – just don’t expect it to answer all your burning questions about the aliens or provide the same level of tension and emotional depth. And remember, sometimes, even amid an alien apocalypse, it’s all about the journey… and a slice of pizza!
