INTRODUCTION
Nicolas Cage and Oz Perkins, both well-known actors, joined forces to create a special movie together. They wanted to express their love and gratitude for their mothers through this film. Titled “Longlegs,” the movie was released in July 2024.
Oz Perkins wrote the story and directed the film, taking charge of the set. Maika Monroe, recognized from other films, plays the main character.
Nicolas Cage not only acted in the movie but also contributed financially through his company, Saturn Films. Other actors like Blair Underwood and Alicia Witt play significant roles in the story.
“Longlegs” is a suspenseful and chilling film meant for mature audiences due to its violent and disturbing scenes. It runs for about an hour and 40 minutes, giving plenty of time for thrills and scares!
WHAT IS LONGLEGS ABOUT? PLOT/SYNOPSIS
In the funky 70s, a curious young girl crosses paths with a strange, pale-faced stranger. Fast forward to the 90s, rookie FBI agent Lee Harker investigates a chilling serial killer who leaves puzzling messages and targets families with 9-year-old daughters around their birthdays.
Here’s where it gets strange: all the victims share this eerie pattern, with each crime scene bearing a creepy letter signed by someone named “Longlegs.” There are no signs of forced entry or fingerprints, just these unsettling messages.
Lee has a gut feeling stronger than Grandma’s secret cookie recipe. As she digs deeper, she uncovers a shocking link between the families that send chills down her spine! The case becomes deeply personal as Lee unravels a surprising secret from her past hidden in a dusty box of Polaroids.
Will Lee decipher the clues in time? Is the killer more than they appear? And who is the mysterious “man downstairs” that Longlegs keeps mentioning?
MY THOUGHTS ON LONGLEGS
“Longlegs” is a movie that had a lot of hype before it came out. Everyone was talking about it, saying it was going to be the scariest movie of the year. After watching it, I can say it was good, but not as great as people said.
It’s a slow burn, which means it takes its time to build up the story and the scares. It’s more of a psychological thriller with horror elements.
It reminds me a bit of “The Silence of the Lambs.” The movie survives off its vibes, which is not a bad thing.
However, it could have had a better ending to make it scarier and more satisfying.
I still recommend watching “Longlegs.” Just don’t expect it to be the ultimate horror movie the marketing made it out to be. If you keep your expectations in check, you’ll enjoy it more.
CHARACTER PERFORMANCES
Nicolas Cage plays the main bad guy, Longlegs, who is both scary and funny. The marketing said Cage was unrecognizable in this role, but you can tell it’s him. He does a great job, but sometimes it’s hard to know if you should be scared or laugh.
It’s a memorable performance, but not always in a scary way.
Maika Monroe plays FBI Agent Lee Harker, the main character who is trying to catch Longlegs.
She does a good job, but her character feels a bit flat. I wanted to care more about her and her story. The supporting cast, including Alicia Witt, Blair Underwood, and Kiernan Shipka, also did well, making their characters feel real and adding depth to the movie.
VISUAL DESIGN AND CINEMATOGRAPHY
The movie is beautifully shot. The director, Oz Perkins, and the cinematographer, Andrés Arochi, created a very creepy and intense atmosphere.
Each scene looks carefully put together, making you feel inside the movie. The colors, lighting, and camera angles all add to the feeling of dread and tension.
The visual design is one of the best parts of the movie.
WRITING STYLE AND STORY
The story follows FBI Agent Lee Harker as she investigates a serial killer named Longlegs. The script is full of twists and turns, but it also has a lot of plot holes.
Some parts of the story don’t make much sense, and the twist at the end is a bit ‘silly’. Despite these issues, the movie keeps you interested with its suspenseful and mysterious story.
The dialogue is simple, which makes it easy to follow. However, some parts of the story could have been better developed to make it more engaging and satisfying.
THEMES
“Longlegs” explores themes like the darkness inside people and how we deal with fear.
The movie shows how children see the world through rose-colored glasses, but as they grow up, they become aware of the horrors around them. It’s a dark and sad tale that stays with you even after the movie ends.
The movie also touches on the idea of obsession, both from the killer’s perspective and the detective’s. It shows how people can become consumed by their darkness and fears.

rewatched LONGLEGS. much better the second time, immediately catapulted itself into my favs list. its tiring to see so many people only judge horror films based on how scary it was to them. the storytelling and formalism in this movie is unbelievable and maika monroe is a star

CONCLUSION
“Longlegs” is an interesting film with some good and some not-so-good parts. It’s beautifully shot and has a creepy atmosphere, thanks to the director and cinematographer. Nicolas Cage gives a unique and memorable performance.
The story is intriguing but has plot holes and a silly twist. Despite these flaws, the movie keeps you hooked with its suspense and mystery.
It’s not the scariest movie of the year, but it’s worth watching, especially if you enjoy psychological thrillers and horror films.
Overall, “Longlegs” is a good movie that could have been great. If you go in with the right expectations, you’ll have a fun and creepy experience.
