A trumpet out of nowhere gave a deafening sound that shook the whole of mother earth. People got confused and gave different reactions to it. Some had the “It can’t be possible face”; some fell on their knees and started confessing their sins while repenting.
Ismail, a twenty-one-year-old, 6’1, had just woken up to go for Subh prayer. He was up late watching a series he had just downloaded. Like most people, the sound shocked him; he was dozing while changing to his Jalabia when the trumpet sounded. The sound made him wide awake, and he wondered what could have caused so much noise.
Once he let his brain think, he remembered a message himself, everyone across his area, and even across social media got the previous week.
The message read thus: “The world is ending soon. Repent before it is too late” ~XRx. Most people, especially on social media, made fun of the message. Various conspiracy theories were drawn up, too; some said it was the work of a hacking team called XRx, and some claimed the president of a top country sent it as he was going to test his country’s nuclear weapon. His Imam even assured the congregation that it couldn’t be true because there are still Hafiz (people that know the Qur’an offhand) on the face of the earth, so there’s no way the world would end.
As he was going through memory lane, the trumpet gave a sound that was 3 times greater than the first time it sounded, and this time, the sound brought panic to Ismail’s heart; indeed, the end was here. He thought of what he could do. He decided going out of his house to the street would be the best thing to do.
Once he opened the gate, he saw people running helter-skelter, women abandoning their children, and men running so fast that their heels touched the back of their heads. The scene made him conclude that going to the mosque would be the best thing to do. As he made to go, it started raining cats and dogs, and he had no choice but to take refuge in an apartment not too far from his place. The apartment has a big hall, and on entering, he met many people who also took shelter there.
One of the people started telling what was to come next after the trumpet had finished sounding. He started telling the tales of how the Antichrist would come and some other creatures, Gog and Magog, would follow him. He concluded that committing suicide would be better than facing tribulations that are to come. Most people agreed with him and told the occupant to bring his gas cylinder to where they were. They opened it and lit a spark, thereby burning themselves alive before the tribulations started.
At first, Ismail thought they were joking, but the moment the host brought the gas cylinder to where they were, he asked to be excused. The nearest man to him held him that there was no way he was going to leave the place, he relaxed a bit like he had agreed to stay, but once this man dulled himself, he ran out and kept on running aimlessly.
After running for some time, he met some people who were also running away from the area and joined them. The burning themselves idea was a general thing in the area, so the people running were all running away from being burnt alive. They ran for some minutes until they reached a point that felt like a waterfall. It was as if the land had broken, and the pit was bottomless! They made for another direction and started running again, this time with every energy left in their body. As they made for a sharp turn where the road ended, what they saw made some of them shit in their pants. THE SUN was on the floor facing them in the direction they were approaching. They tried turning left again and saw the replica of the ‘waterfall-like’ situation they had seen earlier. Now there’s no more running; they must decide between drowning and getting roasted alive. Ismail made for the water and fell deep into the bottomless waterfall.
Mr. Rasheed gave his son, Ismail, a very hard slap to the ear, and it resonated with his body system. Ismail stood up sluggishly and felt that his body was wet. Did he survive the fall into the water? He asked himself. His father’s voice brought him back to life when he said, “Stupid boy, even pouring water on you couldn’t wake you up for Solat. You had to be slapped before you could wake up.”
